As one grows old, they tend to pay lesser attention to their own health. Their priorities shift from themselves to other things like their children, their grand-children and other activities. It is expected that their children will take care of them. However, it is highly suggestible that seniors take good care of themselves and not become too dependent on anyone else. Here are some simple tips for seniors to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Maintaining a Healthy Weight: Obesity is the lead cause of heart diseases, blood pressure and diabetes. It is very important for seniors to maintain a healthy weight. Being underweight at this stage might also be dangerous. A frail body is prone to weakness.
Eating Healthy: Related to the previous point, it is important that seniors maintain a balanced diet. An old body may need fewer calories but, needs a lot of nutrients even to carry out the normal routine of the person. They should pay more attention on the consumption of fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts etc. Basically, everything that has extra fiber-content and is easily digestible.
Exercise: It is important that old people do some sort of physical activity on a daily basis. Exercise prevents from a lot of diseases, keeps the blood circulation in order and prevents pain from arthritis. In addition to this, exercise improves endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility.
Routine Check-ups: Older people should go for routine check-ups. It is important to know how well-functioning the body is until it’s too late. Routine check-ups will let you know if something is not right or some organ is not functioning properly. If that is the case, routine check-ups will diagnose it before it is too late.
Quit all Bad Habits: As ones’ body gets old, it is suggested that they quit all bad habits. Smoking and drinking have worse effects on the old body than they have on the younger ones.
Managing Stress: Many seniors like to keep busy and engage themselves in their own businesses. This can cause stress and tension. Although, it is a good thing that they keep busy and maintain their own earnings but, health is also important. Socialize: It is often observed that seniors are left unattended for long hours of the day since every other member is busy with their own lives. This may lead them to feel sad, lonely and left out. At this stage they should focus on socializing with other people of their age groups. Not only will it combat their isolation, it will help them in becoming more evolved and interactive.
Dedicate Time to Yourself: Since you are done with most of the responsibilities of your life, this is the time for yourself. Do what you love. Find your passion and pursue it. But make sure that you do not get too ambitious in choosing what you want to do. Take your age and physical status into consideration and then pursue your dreams.
Get Good Sleep: At this age it is very important that you get good sleep. A well-rested body harbors a proper functioning mind and that is what we are aiming to achieve.
Stay Mentally Active: Any sort of exercise that focuses on the brain is must at this age as amnesia and Alzheimer’s disease are high risks at this juncture. It is said that consumption of milk and nuts stops or at least slows down the progression of this disease.
